The original Architecture and Morality tour show at Lancaster Uni was the first gig I ever went to and I was impressed with them (they where contemporaries of Echo and The Bunnymen and Teardrop Explodes and had been on Factory records, so they where a cool experimental band then, the Scouse Kraftwerk, honest) and seeing live gigs. I have not stopped going to gigs but I did stop going to see OMD as they left their experimental roots behind them and became a pop band. So it was with great trepidation I went to see the reformed OMD replay their 1981 album in full.
The lights dim and the instrumental track Architecture and Morality thunders into action without any members of the band present. After a while two thirds of them make their way onto the stage and take control of the machines to begin the second song. The singer Andy McClusky, arrives in time for the singing and to take the band into the third song The New stone Age.
By the end of the third song the audience is split 50/50 between those who love these slabs of industrial music and those who are wondering what the hell is going on and where are all the pop songs. Then McClusky himself acknowledges this by saying “if you have not listened to Architecture and Morality for a while you may be shocked by this noise, don’t worry it gets worse”. They then hit the pop songs on the album, Souvenir, Joan of Arc and Maid of Orleans. This trio of songs unit the audience and create an electric atmosphere which visable shocks the band. After playing the rest of the album McCluskey says “That’s the end of the cultural revolution, we thought we could change the world with music but gave up and wrote pop songs instead”. They then play a greatest hits package including some of the very sad and naff songs you think of when you here the name OMD. Things pick up again at the end and in the encores with a few early singles and a track which missed the original album.
Over all I was glad I went it was great to hear this old album played live in full, I just wish they did not play any of the latter stuff as it reminded my why I stopped liking them. Even so it was good for the memories and its a great idea, playing an old album in full, one which a few other old bands have done and are planning to do. So if one of your bands are going to do it forgive for what they became and go and see why you liked them in the first place.
The Olympia Theater is a great little run down theater just off the Temple Bar area of Dublin. I would recommend seeing bands there and it will be great for those who are lucky enough to have tickets for REM when they start a weeks long residency there latter in the year.
The support was Lover Electric who where a due playing a 80’s casio keyboard and a guitar. Nothing great, very retro 80’s
